Marshawn Lynch famously said during Super Bowl week that he was ''all about that action, boss.'' His action on Friday was defiance. The Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks opened training camp and Lynch chose to stay away because of his current contract situation. ''Everybody is calling him, but it's a business at the end of the day,'' Seattle defensive end Michael Bennett said. You want him to be here, but as a player you understand the business side too.'' Lynch's absence was expected after former teammate Michael Robinson said Thursday night on NFL Network that Lynch would not show for the opening day of camp.

Carl Nicks has abandoned his bid to get back on the field with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. General manager Jason Licht declined to discuss details of the split, calling Nicks a ''very prideful athlete'' who did everything he could to try to put his injuries behind him and rejoin the team. ''He wanted what we best for the Buccaneers. We were honest with Carl.'' Nicks didn't miss a game in four seasons with the New Orleans Saints, however a left toe injury two years ago and the recurrence of a MRSA infection in his left foot kept him off the field for most of his stay with the Bucs.

Coach Ron Rivera said the Panthers will take it slow with Newton, making sure to avoid any potential setbacks.

The Pittsburgh Steelers want to reward Ben Roethlisberger for the two Super Bowls he's already won while also making sure the talent around their quarterback is good enough to make a legitimate run at a third ring. Steelers president Art Rooney II said Friday the team is putting off awarding Roethlisberger a lengthy - and certainly lucrative - extension until the offseason so it can focus on improving a roster that has missed the playoffs each of the past two years. Pittsburgh typically renegotiates with its starting quarterback when there are two years remaining on the current deal. Roethlisberger is about to enter the penultimate season of an eight-year, $102 million contract he signed before the 2008 season.
